Shinano River Niigata

The longest Shinano River in Japan flows 367 km from Nagano Prefecture to Niigata Prefecture. This sight is a view from Ojiya city in winter morning. As the morning sun and the snow shine beautifully, the river slowly flows.

  • 新潟はこうした湾曲した川が堰き止められて、多くの「潟」が作られてきました。新潟特有の自然史を感じさせるところがよかったです。
  • 一口で「川」といっても、上流と下流とではずいぶん趣が違う。ぐんぐんと一途に河口を目指す上流の流れに比べ、信濃川のように、海が近くなりもうすぐ旅を終える下流域では、どこか楽しげである。いつの時代にも、恵みと交易をもたらした川の雄大さを上手に映し出している。
